One woman has revealed how she transformed her hair to realize frizz-free natural curls employing a special technique that bans ordinary shampoo.
Annie Gouk, from Chorlton, says she’s hooked in to following the ‘Curly Girl Method’ after noticing an enormous difference to her curls in only two washes.
The 27-year-old has spent the past 10 years plaiting her hair every evening to manage her frizzy mane, but she’s now converted to only washing her hair with conditioner and to never towel-dry.

Annie told the M.E.N: “Whenever I washed my hair I could see the curl when it had been drying, but it might go frizzy and straw-like unless I plaited it.
“Now, the very fact I can have that natural curl and it look good is amazing. it had been always there. i actually like it and I’m only in wash two so it can only recover .”
While women are using variations of the technique for years, The Curly Girl Method was created by hairstylist Lorraine Massey, who published a handbook in 2010. And last , thousands of girls are flooding social media with before and after photos.

“The main rule is to avoid certain ingredients in hair products, including sulfates, which is what makes shampoos lather which may strip natural oils from the hair, and silicones, which are usually utilized in conditioners to place softness back to the hair,” Annie explained.
If followers are being really strict, like Annie, they’ll avoid shampoo altogether and just choose a silicone-free conditioner - dubbed the ‘no-poo’ method.
To cleanse the hair with just a conditioner, the scalp must be scrubbed gently for a couple of minutes to make a natural lather, or users can purchase a massage brush to assist .
The data journalist, who first discovered the tactic on TikTok, continued: “Some people might imagine the hair will go greasy if it’s not been shampooed. But that’s why you massage to urge obviate product buildup.
“Silicones will actually beset your hair and provides it that greasy look and feel.”
Annie washes her hair once every week , as she did previously before following the tactic , and uses a hair mask because the next step after washing - which the tactic advises to try to to once every week .

It also says to avoid brushes and combs because they will cause the hair to snap, so Annie only brushes her hair with a wide-tooth comb whilst it's wet - others just use their fingers.
After that, a styling product is scrunched into the wet hair, like a gel or mousse, to define the curls.
Instead of reaching for a towel to wrap the hair in, the tactic advises against employing a regular towel because the fabric causes frizz, says Annie.

“I then do a process called plopping for about quarter-hour . You tip your head upside and place the hair into a cotton t-shirt. I personally use a long-sleeved t-shirt so I can use the arms to tie it together,” Annie said.
“Regular towels are a Curly Girl sin so you'll use microfiber towels. the method helps the curls form within the first place and gets out excess water.
“If you’re being strict, you’ll avoid any heat and let it air dry. But you'll use a low-heat setting with a diffuser and hover the hairdryer over your hair at a distance instead if you don’t have time to let it dry naturally.”

Annie said once you’ve applied these steps, you’ll then get a ‘cast’ - which is when the hair looks wet.
She said: “I never used gel or mousse before because i assumed it looked gross. But you've got to ‘scrunch out the crunch’ and that’s what gives you the soft bouncy curls.”
The Curly Girl Method offers different variations for whether your hair is curly, wavy, or coily, and whether the hair needs more moisture or protein.

Annie uses a conditioner by Manchester-based brand Faith In Nature and pairs it with a Garnier hair mask, before scrunching her tresses with Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly.
“I did tons of research into what i assumed my hair needed, but it’s trial and error to urge a routine down. Everyone’s hair is different, in order that they recommend that once you begin to start out really basic so you aren’t wasting money with just a conditioner, mask, and gel. Then you'll add other ingredients in later,” explained Annie.
“They say that one among the Umberto conditioners for a quid works well, and even a Tesco own-brand mousse . There’s a lot of cheap products on offer to start out out with.

“It could seem sort of a lot more work but once you’ve nailed it, i feel it’s pretty simple. You’re not actually doing much to your hair, it’s about getting it healthy.
“And you've got to twiddling my thumbs . I’ve seen numerous women post within the dedicated Facebook group saying that they’ve been doing it for a couple of months and they’re still unhappy, then you see people on the opposite side that are like ‘stick with it - you’ll get there - it’ll look amazing if you keep it up .'”
